BEAUTY: Clothing--Alexander McQueen

Sarah Burton, creative director at my beloved McQueen continues the tradition of fine men's tailoring on the cutting edge of artistic interpretation started by her mentor and the house's namesake. For her Spring Summer '16 London Collections: Men showing, sailors and nautical wear took her imagination. A pervasive motif was the iconic sailor tattoo here rendered in blue on white. Mermaids, anchors and compass roses played across coats, collars and sleeves as they would on a sailor's arms, chest, and shoulders. Nautical stripes made an appearance as did, shockingly, the Dazzle Ship pattern from WWII. Captain coats and its more humble relative, the pea coat, were translated into modern pieces with the addition of buttons and grommets (from the sails of a ship...naturally). And the pinnacle was the wild print featuring sea monsters of antiquity based on ancient seafaring maps or Renaissance illustrations on suits, shirts, jackets...and an over-sized terry bathrobe!
